By Jeff Earlywine Have you ever felt deep down in your gut that you need to have a conversation with an employee, co-worker or even your spouse and you don’t know the words to say to keep it from going bad? You know what bad means – hurt feelings, yelling, or possibly sleeping on the couch? LOL What if you had a simple formula that will give you a better than average chance of nothing like that happening and a good feeling inside too?
Below are four very simple statements and/or questions that will help you have critical conversations regardless of who it is. If I were coaching you I would suggest that you write these down on a 3×5 card and keep them close by most all the time. I say this because of my own experience. What I mean by that is while these helpful hints below will work, they only work if you remember to use them.
Say this to the person:
When I see or hear ________________________
I feel ____________________________
Because I need or want _______________________________
I would like you to _____________________ or would you be willing to ____________________?
